Is There a disadvantage of Material Late Block?

Dear Gurus,

We have a problem. 2 users can not work with the same material at the same time, the system gives an error as “the material is locked by the user XXX”

I know that there is a customization about this .

Customizing at MM -> General Settings for MM ->Set Material Blocks for Goods Movements.

At our system it is set to exclusive block, i want to change it to late block.

Do you know about any disadvantages about late blockage? Or is there another way ?

thanks in advance.

Hi,

This will not solve the problem, at best it MAY make the problem occur less often but only by increasing the risk slightly.

But if someone is updating the material master record it will ALWAYS be blocked to other users. The settings just determine at which point the lock is set.

Have a look at the help behind this field and you will see the advantages and disadvantages of each.

There is also a flag (on ECC6, not sure if it is there on earlier releases) called “shared lock”. This, when set on, can help reduce the situations where the material is locked. Basically it allows you to carry on material movements even if the material master is being updated at teh same time (as long as the valuation fields are not being changed). SPRO > Logistics General > Material MAster > Basic Settings > Make global settings.

So there are ways to reduce the problem slightly but you will always get timnes when the material is locked and it is always annoying when it happens (even though it is absolutely essential).
